How much difference

Getting the details of your mailing right can make a huge difference.  Here are some examples of small changes that have taken place that have made huge differences in mailings of information about books to schools.

  • I added 2 sentences to a flyer, and we went from losing £5000 on the campaign to making £25,000
  • In one case we re-wrote the sales letter - nothing more.  The brochure, the telephone sales and everything else stayed the same.  We went from £20,000 sales per mailing up to £250,000.
  • In trial A two leaflets were sent out bringing in a response rate of 3%, which was acceptable.  In trial B the same two leaflets went out with a third leaflet advertising another product.  The response rate collapsed to zero.
  • Some increases are small - it is not unusual to take a 2% return and turn it into 3%.  Not dramatic but it can change a break-even campaign into a profitable campaign.

We all know that teaching history works much better when the children are excited, stimulated and enthralled by the subject.   When their minds feel the historical events as real and alive, then the experience of history begins.

Sadly not every history book manages to do engineer this transformation, and an endless desire to produce cheap and cheerful publications can mean lifeless illustrations and dry text that does nothing to grab the children's imagination and thrust them into the historical events.
